- to get you going for
Painting
- When painting the exterior of
your home, remember to work from top to bottom, just like you would when
painting indoors. And be sure to avoid extremes in temperature and humidity.
Do not paint in direct sunlight, instead, work on the sides of the house that
are in the shade for best results.
- PAINT
QUANTITY ESTIMATOR
- Consider
three factors when you compute your paint requirements:
1. How big is the area?
2. How many coats will you apply?
3. What is the condition of the surface you're covering?
Painting the Exterior
Calculate
the sides of the outside of your house much the same way you calculate the
inside. Multiply the length by the height of each side and add them together.
Gables are
the triangular spaces created by the roofline. Multiply the width by the
height of the highest point in the gable and divide by 2 to get the area of
one gable. Make this same computation for each gable and total all.
If there are
overhanging eaves (soffits), multiply the length by the width and add this to
the total.
Painter's
Tips
• It's
better to have a little extra paint than not enough to finish the job. You can
always save the remainder for touch ups.
• If the
surface area is rough or textured, add 20% more paint to your calculation.
• If your
home is done in narrow siding, add 10% more paint.
• Allow 21
square feet of surface area for an average door and 15 square feet for average
window.

SURFACE
PREPARATION
Before you begin
to paint, make sure surfaces are properly Rescued :
Repaired -
Sanded - Cleaned - Dried
Repair cracks or
flaws by working spackling compound into the holes or cracks with a flexible
putty. Nail heads should be sanded, then spot primed.
Sand recently
spackled or glossy areas on previously painted surfaces.
Clean surface and remove mildew with Fred and Gerry's Cleaning formula. Rinse
well.
Fred &
Gerry's Exterior Cleaning Formula
2/3 cup TSP or TSP substitute
1/3 cup detergent
1 qt. bleach
3qt. warm water
Dry surfaces
thoroughly before painting.
HOW TO
APPLY
1. Work from
high to low, starting on the side of the house that is not in direct sunlight.
If there are dormers on that side, paint them first, leaving the trim and
windows for later.
2. Paint the
siding in horizontal strips, moving the ladder as necessary. Work from top to
bottom in slightly overlapping sections.
3. When the
siding is complete, start on the high trim areas working your way down to
doors and windows.
4. After
painting the trim, finish up with the final details such as porch railings and
stairs.
Painter's Tips
• Painting
aluminum or vinyl siding is usually fast work. Use a roller that covers an
entire horizontal row of siding (7" or 9").
• Painting trim
and other decorative features requires a good, angled brush for best results.
CLEAN-UP AND DISPOSAL
• Clean paint
from containers and applicators immediately.
• Pour unused
paint back into the original cans.
• Squeeze
excess paint from rollers and brushes.
• Use a little
dishwashing detergent to clean latex paint from applicators. Mineral spirits
will clean solvent-based paint -- brushes and rollers may have to be soaked or
agitated in order to dissolve paint.
Painter's Tip
• Make sure
paint is dry in empty cans before disposing in trash.
