Checking Hot Water Tank Corrosion.
from Tips 03/30/2002
Checking corrosion. Make an annual inspection of the sacrificial anode -- a magnesium or aluminum rod submerged in the tank to absorb the chemical action that causes tank corrosion. Shut off the water and power to the heater and remove the rod by loosening the anode bolt at the top of the heater. If the rod has corroded away, replace it.
