Of course the ultimate way is to never light a fire at all, but that's no fun. There's nothing like the smell, sound and warmth of a nice cozy fire on a cold winter evening! You can enjoy your fire and be safe, too.

First of all, do a little preventative maintenance by having it cleaned out every so often. Residue builds up on the inside of the chimney and can catch fire with disastrous results. You can do it yourself, or if there is a lot of build up, you may have to call a professional. (I think they still call them chimney sweeps!)
