| If an appliance makes a crackling noise, smells hot, or emits a spark when you turn it on, don't unplug it or touch the outlet. Go to the main service box and turn off the breaker or unscrew the fuse controlling the circuit. Then, with dry hands, cover the appliance plug with a thick dry towel and pull it out. If the problem is in the switch, turn it off using a clean dry stick or wooden spoon, not your hands. |
